Initiation

Week 01: Group formation & concept

Group:
Zak Ford
Jason Lochtenberg
Rebecca Fleming

Concept:

Psychological thriller, interactive film.

Allows viewers to control the action based on their choices throughout the storyline.

The film will be produced on DVD. Using the DVD on a computer enables the PC version, complete with quick-time events (the player has to make life-or-death reactions in a short time). Playing the DVD on a regular DVD player pauses the action between choices, allowing audiences to take their time when directing the story.

We plan to make the PC version in Flash, using Actionscript to program the button-pressing sequences. A DVD authoring program will be used for the regular version.

Films sequences will be edited in Final Cut Pro. The film will be shot in High Definition, and atmospheric video filters will be applied during post-production. On top of scene lighting during filming, the filters will give the movie a unique, gritty mood.

We plan to include an emotional, stirring soundtrack consisting of string instruments and piano. We will compose this with software such as GarageBand.

Due to the nature of the film, there will be several unique endings the player can achieve. This gives the player a reason to replay the “game” again. We will implement these multiple endings and scenarios by filming all different possibilities the player will encounter, and organising them in hierarchical chart. Example:

We are currently contemplating working on this project for the two semesters of Studio this year. The reasons we want to use two semesters are:

  • More time to make a fully fleshed out interactive movie
  • Due to the amount of filming AND programming required, we feel that our concept will involve more work than another type of project. It is basically a video and a programming project combined into one.
  • With only 1 semester, we are concerned we will rush things and either complete a very simplified and low-quality version of what we are aiming for, or not complete it at all.
