Week 05

There didn't seem to be a great deal to do this week while we waited to film during the Easter break. However, we managed to keep ourselves busy.

Jason secured a great location for us to film the latter half of our project. It's an old, decrepit holiday house in Dromana. It should really provide an unsettling feeling to viewers.

With this project, I'm hoping to generate a tense atmosphere for the audience. I'm a huge fan of the horror genre, especially films that work on a subtle, disturbing level. Silent Hill, The Ring and video games such as Fatal Frame all have unsettling supernatural elements that provide a unique take on the horror genre.

The Silent Hill film excelled in building up an atmosphere of hopelessness, despair and uncertainty. I want to create a film with a similar atmosphere. A movie that fits into the horror or thriller genre, but isn't "screamworthy", just creepy and disturbing.

Hearing about this house in Dromana made me eager to start filming as soon as possible. I think we can really capture the essence of disturbing horror with such a run-down, destroyed location.

I had some fun this week researching how to make fake blood with Jason. It seems like all we need is corn syrup and some food colouring, so we're going to do some shopping over the weekend. We've also decided to all buy some t-shirts that we can ruin with blood and knife slashes. We're going to each buy two identical shirts, so we can ruin one (for scenes that take place near the end of the film) and keep one intact (for scenes near the start of the film). This way, we can film scenes in any order we like without having to worry about costume continuity.

We're filming the first scene on Wednesday night. Can't wait!
