Week 04

Starting this week with our project documentation all complete was a great and satisfying feeling. We submitted the 40+ page document on time, but before we could relax, we had to organize our filming schedule.

We all figured our best bet to get all the filming done was during the Easter Break between weeks 05 and 06. With that in mind, we visited the IT Services office and booked some filming equipment for the break.

What we booked:

  • 2x Canon HV30 1080i High Definition cameras
  • 2x camera tripods
  • 1x bug microphone
  • 1x shotgun microphone
  • 1x boom pole
  • 3x halogen lights & tripods
It will be our first time filming in high definition, so we're all pretty excited. I purchased a 1080p LCD TV last year, so I'm eager to find out how our footage looks on such a display.

We also haven't used bug microphones before. Mark Szota demonstrated how they work, and they seem like they'll be very handy for recording dialogue from a distance.

Jason and I also went hunting for props this week. We planned to check out a martial arts store in Seaford to buy fake knives and guns, but we feared they wouldn't look realistic enough. Researching BB guns and airsoft guns on the internet proved to be a fruitless endeavour, as these items are not easily acquired in Australia.

In the end, we settled for a few plastic cap guns found in the Reject Shop. They look realistic... save for the fact they have bright orange paint on them. I'm going to try applying some black spray paint and see how they turn out.
